Natalia Manola – e-Infrastructures: The starting blocks for Open Science and Innovation. The OpenAIRE case
Abstract. There is an emerging consensus among the members of the academic research community that eScience practices should be congruent with Open Science, which essentially facilitates multi-disciplinary collaboration and data sharing and re-use, entailing Open and Shared Access to research data, data services, tools, analyses, and methods. This short paper presents the key characteristics of a sustainable open science e-Infrastructure as gained from six years of operation of OpenAIRE, a key EU e-Infrastructure on scholarly communication. presented.

Panos Constantopoulos – Leveraging Digital Cultural Memories
Abstract. The penetration of ICT in the management and study of material culture and the emergence of digital cultural repositories and linked cultural data in particular are expected to enable new paths in humanities research and new approaches to cultural heritage. Success is contingent upon securing information trustworthiness, long-term preservation, and the ability to re-use, re-combine and re-interpret digital content. In this perspective, we review the use in the cultural heritage domain of digital curation and curation-aware repository systems; achieving semantic interoperability through ontologies; explicitly addressing contextual issues of cultural heritage and humanities information; and the services of digital research infrastructures.

Gita Senka – Experiment with Digital Technology in Arts and Culture, the Case of Latvia
Abstract. Accessibility of Latvian cultural heritage to the public via digital environment is a major challenge for the cultural sector, where the priorities are effective digital stock management and long-term preservation of the cultural content, ensuring widespread online availability. Current situation with availability of Latvian cultural content and services in the digital environment does not contribute to the appropriate cultural institutions’ activities within information society conditions. In order to solve the situation, there are several successful projects, which can be taken as a basis and best practice tools for further digitization process, where the main challenges are copyright issues, technological follow-up and development of user-attractive digital products for all audiences, particularly educational and science sector.

K. Stefanov, B. Bontchev, P. Boytchev, A. Georgiev, A. Grigorov – Reusing Components from Cultural Heritage Games – the RAGE Project Approach
Abstract. Video games proved to be an attractive media for presenting cultural heritage issues. They can use virtual worlds to present cultural and historic information in amazing and highly appealing way. Each video game is implemented using set of valuable artifacts (components) reflecting technological, socioeconomic and historical issues. These software components are known as software assets, which are key output of the RAGE project. They can be used by game developers to enhance the pedagogical and educational value of their games. These software assets cover a broad spectrum of functionalities, including emotion detection, intelligent adaptation and social gamification. In order to facilitate integration and interoperability, all of these assets adhere to a common model, which describes their properties through a set of metadata. In this paper, we present the RAGE asset model and asset metadata model, highlighting key issues and challenges in constructing RAGE assets and using asset metadata model with flexible metadata editor, facilitating both adaptation and improvement of the asset metadata model.

Abstract. Semantic search augments the goals and scope of traditional search and information retrieval tasks. The paper analyzes the main aspects of semantic search and the corresponding features of some popular semantic search systems. The presentation is focused on a discussion of the implementation of a successful project in building modern semantic search engine. A brief analysis of the gained experience in some experiments with free software tools for advanced semantic technologies accomplished within the Master’s degree course in Semantic Technologies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University, is presented and the main techniques used for image and video semantic extraction are discussed in addition.

Abstract. The paper introduces the mobile presentation of Bulgarian bells as the newest developments in the GUIDE@HAND mobile application family. The integration of the Web based archive on the Bulgarian bells (Multimedia Fund “BellKnow”) and the mobile application family made it possible that information on bells can be presented on mobile devices. A standalone offline mobile application (BOOK@HAND Bells) was created providing multimedia information on bells including textual description (history, creator, material, height, location, description, etc.), audio files containing the sounds of the bells, photos, videos presenting the bells while being tolled and diagrams representing the acoustic characteristics of the bells.

Abstract. The paper presents how the VR technology helps tourists in selecting their destinations. The current state-of-the-art service is the result of systematic development activities which has become available in the tourist information office (Tourinform) in the town of Miskolc. The visitors can discover the local sights either on the Web site of the tourist organisation, or in the GUIDE@HAND Miskolc smart phone application, or from now on, in a virtual space due to the Virtual Reality (VR) technology with the help of 3D VR glasses and spherical panorama pictures.

Abstract. In the light of the recent concerns in the assessment of the new conservation treatments and of the development and application of methodologies, technologies, models and tools for CH damage assessment, this paper will deal with some innovative topics related to the digital models for protecting cultural heritage assets in front of various damages. Application of new technologies and digitalization of Basarabi monument is a preventive measure, helping us to build a virtual reconstructions as model for its potential reconstruction and preserving, to give access for the widest possible audience. It will be discussed the new technologies, as the non-destructive diagnosis technologies for the safe conservation a this historic, cultural and architectural – Basarabi churches. For the micro-climatic measurements, a number of sensors have been well distributed inside and outside and a diagram of humidity an temperature is evaluated. The practical examples of restoration and preservation and innovative solutions for the consolidation of this architectural monument, in relation with digitalization (by on-site and remotely data collection, virtual reality and documentation of the heritage). For a digital image of this monument, both a 3D laser scanner and some common digital photos are used, in order to obtain the 3D model of the church, and of the envelope of the church that should be applied over it to stop the seriously damage processes.

Boris Shishkov – Digitization of Cultural Heritage – a Service-Oriented Approach
Abstract. The digitization of Cultural Heritage assumes an interdisciplinary approach, collaborative knowledge co-creation, and distant communication. This can only be fulfilled by ICT means requiring in turn alignment between those who deliver the technical (IT) support and those who are in the role users. A Service-Oriented approach is considered adequate in this regard because of users’ composing services at high level (with underlying technical complexity remaining hidden) and developers’ considering the software components whose functionality is delivered through the services. All this requires however complex regulations to conform with. Semiotic norms in combination with workflows are considered in this regard. In this paper, we propose an approach based on Service-Oriented Computing and Organizational Semiotics, directed to Cultural Heritage digitization. The approach is partially illustrated by means of an example.

Kamen Angelov – Main Architectures Used in ETL as a Tool, Necessary for the Integration of Data in Large Volumes - a Task in the Field of Digital Preservation of Cultural Heritage
Abstract. The digital recording of Cultural Heritage (CH) and its metadata relates to the concept for data warehousing systems and their lifecycle. It uses models and development tools of ETL packages. The tasks used to extract metadata from raw digitized CH data often include hard computing problems, including NP-complete problems. This paper describes the current state of digital preservation of Cultural Heritage with an accent on data integration and performance optimization of processes. We show our vision for further solutions for automated optimization of resource utilization in ETL jobs cutting development cost. In parallel, we describe our experiment that uses quantum computation (in simulation mode) to solve hard combinatorial problems as multiple query optimization.

Abstract. The implementation of the idea of improved access and effective usage of digital libraries content has led to a new type of services, providing their wider content integration and merging. In this context, the analysis of integrating service usability is essential and gives new directions for functionality extension and improvement. This paper presents an analysis of the usage of the interoperability service, compiling content from two digital libraries for Orthodox art and knowledge – the Encyclopaedia Slavica Sanctorum and the Bulgarian Iconographical Digital Library.

Magdelena Stoyanova, Detelin Luchev, Dessislava Paneva-Marinova – Optimization of Natural Dyes' Non-contact Characterization and Interdisciplinary Application Using Ensemble Classifiers and Genetic Algorithms
Abstract. The reported evaluation of the problematic encountered by non-contact characterization of natural dyestuffs demonstrates that practically no one analytical method alone – destructive, less, or non – can warrant absolute reliability of the results. The main obstacles are due, in general, to our limited knowledge on reactivity of natural compounds, their sources, methods of proceeding and application; to the complexing role of the ambient/medium on the photo reactions, as well as to the actual possibilities of analytical techniques; to the lack of commonly accepted standards among different scientific traditions, etc. For to overwhelm these drawbacks and optimize accuracy of NDs characterization, we propose the integration of chemio-physical with computational assessment. The proposed approach consists in calculation the probability of a hypothesis comparing new results with already stored interdisciplinary data using the high performance ensemble techniques Random Forest and Random Subspace based on the genetic approach termed EV-Ensemble approach. Its role is to render more accurate the analytical results, to avoid sampling and simplify the identification analysis, to facilitate interdisciplinary applications of NDs in high technologies, and to share generated experience between the research community.

Ralitsa Dutsova – Digital Presentation of Bulgarian Language Heritage - Tools and Web-applications
Abstract. The article describes a model of integrating language techniques with leading-edge technology to develop a web-based on-line tool for heritage language preservation and e-learning. Ivan Derzhanski, Olena Siruk – Affinal Kinship Terminology in the Corpus of Bulgarian and Ukrainian Parallel Texts
Abstract. In this study we examine the occurrences and correspondences of terms for affinal kinship in a Bulgarian–Ukrainian parallel corpus of fiction. All instances of the terms selected for study, matching and non-matching, were located and counted, and the frequencies compared. Some of the asymmetries found may have roots in culture and history whilst others reflect diverse features of language and the practice of literary translation.

Stefka Kovacheva – Presentation of UNESCO Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Sites as Knowledge System in a Learning Environment
Abstract. The article describes cultural heritage sites in Bulgaria, under the protection of UNESCO, as database elements that can be used for e-learning. The learning environment will motivate intellectual inquiry and, through organizing the methods of collecting and managing information, will be created cultural knowledge for existing and new sites, which will be evaluated and promoted. The environment serves the State Educational Standards (SES) of educational content for the cycle Social Sciences and Civic Education. The established database presents structured, scientifically proven and didactically correct knowledge, and is a conceptual framework of how sites can be viewed, perceived and "assembled". For the users (learners) the information about sites is a basis for research and a communication tool. By interpreting the cultural significance of artifacts, they structure information based on the attributes of the database. The features of the sites are a carrier of memorable and enriching information. The meaning is not found only in a specific object, but is created from the interaction between user, message and environment.

Abstract. The article is a summary of a multi-year research into certification of bells of 16th - early 20th centuries collected as a result of liturgical instruments study of 287 bell towers, churches and museums. Analysis of archives from Belarus contrib-uted to the research resurrecting knowledge about lost bell heritage. This is also the first attempt to discuss the establishment of digital Belarusian Historic Bells Archive and introduction of campan handling basic training into educational programs of religious educational establishments.

Pavel Hristov, Emilian Petkov – Development of Web-Based Information System for Visualization of Three-dimensional Models of Museum Exhibits
Abstract. In the following article main results are going to be summarized about three-dimensional web development and technologies. An introduction to 3D representation methods that are applied on the featured three-dimensional webpage is going to be presented. Transformation techniques will be described, which convert a traditional two-dimensional webpage into a fully functional three-dimensional platform. The methods and concepts used are based on technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The principle of automatic conversion is going to be showed, upon which almost any two-dimensional webpage can be converted into a 3D website, including minimal manual interaction. Future concept and conclusions are also described.

Abstract. This paper describes an online environment for showing the human body in an interactive 3D format. By using that platform, various groups of medical personnel, patients and students can fully manipulate models of digitized male, female and child bodies. The highest level of detail available for the objects being dis-played allows users to view any specific part, system and organ, show how certain condition affects the human body, add annotations and render animations. The paper also draws attention on the current challenges in the industry and how they are approached.

Abstract. The priceless knowledge from the scientific periodicals, published by Bulgarian museums, has fallen into oblivion over the years. In the era of electronic information, the opportunity arises this once lost knowledge to be made Open Access - free of all restrictions on access. Upon digitilization and correct annotation of the museum paper editions followed by providing them on the Internet for free access, there will be offered scope for a more comprehensive study of the Bulgarian cultural heritage, an integral part of which are the works of its researchers. Registering content in platforms such as Europeana / Bulgariana and setting common standards to facilitate finding the information will be the next challenge for the followers of the idea of cultural heritage digital repositories.

Valeri Katzounov – Endangered Photo Collections about the Participation of Preindustrial Bulgaria in Three Wars in the Beginning of the 20th Century
Abstract. The resources of the modern technology presuppose an initiative development in order to unite the efforts and activities for the collaboration in digitalization of the most important pieces of cultural and historical heritage. In a number of cases they have received the support of scientific projects for the creation of an open communication environment with a purpose of promoting the cultural values of the community. This report presents work on a research project for the conservation of cultural heritage at risk. The problem is with national priority and occupies a significant place in the European integration process. The two collections with which we apply in the British Library need special attention due to their poor structural condition even at the time of their transfer to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences more than 50 years ago. The first collection was created by Colonel Petar Darvingov and consists of 3100 black and white old photos, maps and sketches. The second collection of Aleksandar Bozhinov contains 2050 old photos, sketches, caricatures and cartoons with pencil and ink. The documents have an exceptional his-torical and informational value, but their physical conditions hinders their scientific use. The creation of digital copies will enable working with them, which in turn will protect the originals from further damage. The copied documents will build a distinct insurance fund and the institution will be able to broadcast scientific information through various forms of promotion of the fund – exhibitions, presentations, etc.

Abstract. While websites are of great interest for digital archives, the digital long term preservation of websites is a huge problem. The reason is that websites consist of a large number of file formats and require today’s hardware and software environment to work properly. PABLO is a software tool that processes websites and transforms them into a dramatically simplified form that is simple enough for digital archiving and exhaustive enough to preserve the websites content and appearance and allows users to browse the entire site like the original.

Katrina Koleva, Kalina Sotirova, Elena Naidenova – Digitization of Documentation at the Scientific Archive of the National Institute of Archeology with Museum
Abstract. This paper is focused on the theory, standards and good practices in digitization of archival documents, as implemented in the Scientific Archive at the National Institute of Archeology with Museum (SA of NIAM-BAS). We explored metadata standards for archival documentation ISAD, EAD and “universal” cultural metadata standard Dublin Core trying to choose the best fit for representing of all the fields of SA of NIAM to de facto “standard”, used in NIAM-BAS since the 60s. The archival documentation of archeological museum is very specific and contains five different types of documents: scientific report, field diary, field inventory book, photographic documentation and graphic documentation. The results and current annotation specifics are explained. Perspectives for future information system development are outlined.

Boyan Bontchev, Desislava Paneva-Marinova, Lubomil Draganov – An Educational 3D Maze Game for Bulgarian Orthodox Iconography
Abstract. Thanks to their specific characteristics, educational video games make game-based learning more effective than traditional teaching approaches with regard of students’ motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. This demonstrator presents an educational 3D maze video game introducing Bulgarian Orthodox iconography. The structure and learning content of the maze game are defined declaratively by applying several contemporary teaching methods and learning scenarios for Orthodox iconographic art study. Next, the game is generated by means of a special software platform for creation of customizable desktop video maze games for education. The demonstrator outlines both the game design and development processes and provides a tour through the generated educational maze rooms and tunnels. It shows how the game can be adapted according player’s achievements, emotions and performance.

Mirko Robov – Creating a Digital Model of the Damages of the Earthquake of Metropolitan Tarnovo /13th century/
Abstract. The studying of the monuments and complexes in Tarnovo, as well as some other examples in its vicinity give us some strong points for determining of earth-quakes and provide data for developing a digital model for this natural phenomenon in the urban environment, in accordance with the specific natural characteristics.
